In my research project, the gender-transformative and masculinities approach studies the sexual and the matrimonial aspects of individuals with disabilities. It questions the impact of established social norms, stigma, and proscribed masculinity on intimacy, consent, and marital decision-making and access to sexual and reproductive health rights by disabled women and men. The study, which uses qualitative and participatory approaches, preempts the lived experience of the married and marriage-seeking people with disabilities and their partners or caregivers. This project aims to explores the patriarchal assumptions, create positive and inclusive masculinities, and produce strong evidence to use in rights-based programming, policy advocacy and community discourse with an ultimate result of advancing dignity, autonomy and fair relationships with individuals with disabilities.
