Jamaima Afridi is the only female journalist working in her area. She is a Pakistan-based freelance journalist working with Nikkei Asia, Asia Democracy Chronicles, TNN, Maati TV, Voicepk.net, The Friday Times, and Empower Women Media. She work on important issues including women's issues, religious freedom, climate change, and Afghan refugees. She reports on Human Rights in conflict zone areas of Pakistan. Her commitment to storytelling and shedding light on marginalized narratives has garnered recognition nationally and internationally. She was the winner of a Constructive Journalism competition in Khyber Pakhtun Pakistan. One of her documentary films (A helping hand across faiths and Countries) won the Inclusion Award in international religious freedom film completion. She is one of the top six finalists for the #TFYoungJournalist Award, a highly competitive honor that brings bright young journalists from all around the world. She was awarded the Youth Impact Award at the IRF Summit in Washington, D.C for her excellent contributions to women's rights and religious freedom. "Our Future, in Our Hands" photos which highlighted the need for climate action were selected for World Movement for Democracy under the theme Democracy Through My Eyes.
Jamaima plans to work on an investigative article, to bring light on the frequently disregarded aspects of consent and women’s sexual autonomy within the framework of sex and marriage in Pakistan.
The article will include five sections: one on consent and marriage, where Jamaima will look at the idea of consent in the context of marriage, examining the societal and cultural norms that ignore a woman’s choice to select her partner. A second section on the burden of pleasure, where she will examine the social stigmas associated with female pleasure and the judgements that women who exhibit pleasure or desire for sex must endure. I'll talk about the common misconceptions and preconceptions that portray women as immoral or promiscuous, exposing how they undermine women's wellbeing and contribute to an environment of fear and repression. A third section on societal perceptions and biases, including the influence of cultural norms, religious beliefs and gender stereotypes influencing judgements on women’s sexual pleasure. Section 4 will tackle legal protections and challenges and the last section will be all about the grassroot organizations and initiatives that go beyond social norms and champion consent, sexual freedom and the appreciation of female pleasure.
