I learnt about your blog through the IDS website and I am very interested in the important work that you are doing. I have a background in International Development but I am becoming increasingly interested in Sexual and Reproductive Health, especially for young women.

I completed my MA in Johannesburg and my thesis was based on the attitudes of students and teachers towards a compulsory subject called Life Orientation. It is a bit like PSHE or Citizenship in UK schools and is supposed to teach the students about a wide variety or topics; from their democratic rights to how to put on a condom correctly.

However, I found that the girls in the grade 11 classes were often left out of the conversations and I linked this to Michelle Fine’s theory of a ‘Missing Discourse of Desire’ in Sex Education lessons across the world.

Whilst in South Africa, I also worked for a HIV organisation on an mHealth project which disseminated free sexual and reproductive health information to young South Africans through their mobile phones. This was an amazing experience as I was responsible for directly answering their often very personal health questions and concerns. I built up an article database on the site so they could educate themselves about contraception and childcare. I also endeavoured to make the sex education sexy and wrote about love, relationships and in depth details about how to achieve female orgasm, which is something that many of the young women did not consider or even know was possible.

I would love to have the opportunity to work or collaborate in some way with the Pleasure Project. I saw on your blog that you invite guest bloggers so I was wondering if you would like me to compose an article about either of my experiences above. Alternatively, if you have any other topics that you would like researching and writing about, I would love to get involved.

Also, I was wondering whether the Pleasure Project has any plans to expand this important work beyond the blog or whether you collaborate with other partners in the field of sexual health. I think it would be amazing if the Pleasure Project could facilitate, for instance, a school program to bring these issues and conversations to the young adults that are starting the journey of exploring their bodies for the first time.
